Our roots are based in southern Germany. In Karlsruhe, at the end of the 1990s, three students came together, full of enthusiasm for sports and very passionate about technology. Working as a team, they develop the “Tipico Model”. Their mission? Nothing less than to offer the best sports betting experience. Based on innovative ideas and a forward-looking business model, one solitary betting shop very quickly gives way to an entire network throughout Germany. At the same time, Tipico’s headquarters are established on the Mediterranean island of Malta. Issued with a Malta Gaming Authority sports betting license valid throughout the EU, Tipico begins to advance its development within Europe. We have not forgotten our origins in all of this, because Tipico’s focus remains concentrated on Germany.
2009
The implementation of our franchise concept sees our franchise partners open around 500 betting shops in German cities. Within a very short time, hundreds of people are at work, in furthering the development of Tipico. One significant step is Tipico’s website, which goes live in 2005. This enables fans to also bet on their favorite teams and sporting events online. The Tipico Customer Card is introduced in 2006. It links stationary sports betting with our online services – a unique selling proposition within our industry. Tipico grows rapidly on the back of these continuous, innovative further developments.
2015
Tipico believes in teams and partnerships: 2010 sees Tipico embark on its first partnership with a Bundesliga club. In 2013, Oliver Kahn, former holder of the title ‘World’s Best Goalkeeper’ becomes our brand ambassador. Furthermore, Austria’s top division football teams have played in the Tipico Bundesliga since 2014, and in 2015 another strong partner comes onboard: FC Bayern München. In the meantime, Tipico is granted a gambling license by the German state of Schleswig-Holstein, and as far back as 2011, our customers have been able to place their bets effortlessly on-the-go by using our new smartphone app.
Sports fans in Germany already trust Tipico – and now so does the renowned investment company, CVC Capital Partners. CVC acquires the majority of shares in the Tipico Group in spring 2016. At the same time, the company continues its growth unabated, and its network of betting shops is becoming denser. December 2016 sees the opening of the 1,000th Tipico Shop in Germany. A significant milestone in the history of Tipico, and the right time to formulate a new mission statement: in Germany, Tipico shall become synonymous with the term sports betting.
2018
Sports fans in Germany are by now placing an average of five million bets with Tipico every day. In other words, Tipico has now reached a market share in excess of 50%. At the same time, Tipico extends its platinum partnership with FC Bayern München in 2017, and since 2018 it has been an official partner to the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga. This move underscores Tipico’s position as a passionate, thrilling sports brand.
2023
More milestones achieved: In 2019, Tipico expands into the USA, opening a location in Hoboken, New Jersey. With “Let’s make this interesting”, Tipico launches its proprietary product developed for the U.S. sports betting market. In 2020, we move to our new Maltese office building, the Tipico Tower. At the same time, in Karlsruhe the Tipico Campus opens for our teams.
And finally, something quite historic happens in Germany that same year: The Regierungspräsidium Darmstadt (regional council of Darmstadt) issues for the first time Germany-wide valid concessions for sports bookmakers. On 9 October 2020, the big day arrives – Tipico is granted a concession in the very first tranche of permissions to be issued.
And 2022 had even more in store: After being live in the US-States Colorado & Iowa, Tipico launches its product offer in Ohio on January 1st. Later that year Tipico obtains the permission for virtual slot games in Germany and in December, eventually, a new German sports betting licence was issued.
